On The Confused Notion Of Predictability Of Nuclear Relations Correlating With The Degree Of Group Nuclearity

Martin & Rose (2007: 98-9):

As we saw for granting amnesty, the predictability of nuclear relations in clauses and groups may correlate with the degree of nuclearity. Relations between central elements are often predictable across fields (granting=refusing, police=force), relations with nuclear elements may be predictable within general fields (grant+amnesty, young+man), while marginal/peripheral elements may only be predictable within specific sub-fields (amnesty x those who plead guilty, shake x uncontrollably).

[1] As we saw, in the examination of this claim, it does not withstand close scrutiny; see Misconstruing Nuclearity As Predictability.

[2] To be clear, the relations between elements are claimed to be relations internal to nominal and verbal groups, and if so, are all equally "predictable across fields", since the relations are said to hold for all groups.

[3] To be clear, this confuses nuclear relations within clauses with a purported relation between central elements of different clauses.

[4] To be clear, these are neither nominal groups nor verbal groups.
